Sermon 17
The New Priesthood
Jerry Mongello continues in Hebrews Chapter 7, Part 1
Hebrews Chapter 7 covers three major points;
- Tithing to Melchizedek!!!
- Describing Melchizedek as a picture of Jesus the Christ, King and Priest forever!!!
- The need for a New Priesthood
[Hebrews 7:1-10 NKJV] 1 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 2 to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of peace,” 3 without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually. 4 Now consider how great this man [was], to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils. 5 And indeed those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to receive tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren, though they have come from the loins of Abraham; 6 but he whose genealogy is not derived from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. 7 Now beyond all contradiction the lesser is blessed by the better. 8 Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he [receives them], of whom it is witnessed that he lives. 9 Even Levi, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, so to speak, 10 for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.
1. Tithing to Melchizedek!!!
Tithing to Melchizedek, brings up the issue of tithing. It is also the first time tithing is mentioned in the word. Giving a tithe equals giving a tenth of your income or first fruits. As we have said before VCC does not do yearly messages on tithing, but we don’t ignore it when it is part of the text. Due to our commitment to preach the whole counsel of God’s word!!! Let me first point out that this portion of the message is not intended to guilt, shame, force, con or convince any member of the congregation to tithe and/or to give Whether you tithe/give or is between you and the Holy Spirit!!! For the record VCC has faithful giver!!!
Tithe Pre-Law Genesis 14:18
[Genesis 14:18-20 NKJV] 18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he [was] the priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said: “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20 And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he gave him a tithe of all.
According to the Law Numbers 18:21, explain
[Nummers 18:21-32 NKJV] 21 “Behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tithes in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work which they perform, the work of the tabernacle of meeting. 22 “Hereafter the children of Israel shall not come near the tabernacle of meeting, lest they bear sin and die. 23 “But the Levites shall perform the work of the tabernacle of meeting, and they shall bear their iniquity; [it shall be] a statute forever, throughout your generations, that among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance. 24 “For the tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer up [as] a heave offering to the LORD, I have given to the Levites as an inheritance; therefore I have said to them, ‘Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.’ ” 25 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 26 “Speak thus to the Levites, and say to them: ‘When you take from the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them as your inheritance, then you shall offer up a heave offering of it to the LORD, a tenth of the tithe. 27 ‘And your heave offering shall be reckoned to you as though [it were] the grain of the threshing floor and as the fullness of the winepress. 28 ‘Thus you shall also offer a heave offering to the LORD from all your tithes which you receive from the children of Israel, and you shall give the LORD’s heave offering from it to Aaron the priest. 29 ‘Of all your gifts you shall offer up every heave offering due to the LORD, from all the best of them, the consecrated part of them.’ 30 “Therefore you shall say to them: ‘When you have lifted up the best of it, then [the rest] shall be accounted to the Levites as the produce of the threshing floor and as the produce of the winepress. 31 ‘You may eat it in any place, you and your households, for it [is] your reward for your work in the tabernacle of meeting. 32 ‘And you shall bear no sin because of it, when you have lifted up the best of it. But you shall not profane the holy gifts of the children of Israel, lest you die.’ “
After the first Avant.
The first Avant before the cross and resurrection Israel was under the Law [the priesthood system], required to give a tenth of all their first fruits.
[Matt 23:23 NKJV] 23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier [matters] of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.
After the Cross.
Acts 4:32
[2 Corinthians 9:6-8 NKJV] 6 But this [I say]: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 [So let] each one [give] as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God [is] able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all [things], may have an abundance for every good work.
[Luke 6:38 NKJV] 38 “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
2. Describing Melchizedek as a picture of Jesus the Christ King and Priest forever!!!
I believe the Holy Spirit gives us a description of Melchizedek as a picture of Jesus after all the heavy weighty doctrine in chapter six!!!
[Hebrews 6:4-8 NKJV] 4 For [it is] impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put [Him] to an open shame. 7 For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those by whom it is cultivated, receives blessing from God; 8 but if it bears thorns and briers, [it is] rejected and near to being cursed, whose end [is] to be burned.
It is as if the God the father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit is saying after writing that chapter, look I has given you all the signs of Christ’s first and second coming beforehand [in fact there are 1,800 prophecies of His second coming, which over 300 of them are in the new testament] , and all of Christ’s works written beforehand all located in these 66 books written by 40 men of God, for you to strengthen your faith and to contend for the faith.
The book of Hebrews is just as relevant today as when it was first written!!!
What was going on in the Church back then is happening to the Church today- It is called DECONSTRUCTIONISM!!! Professing believers renouncing their faith in Jesus. We find that there are pastor, worship leaders, young men and women raised in the Church, go off to school then they deconstruct. Explain
[2 Peter 1:16-21 NKJV] 16 For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” 18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. 19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke [as they were] moved by the Holy Spirit.
[Hebrews 7:1-3 NKJV] 1 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 2 to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of peace,” 3 without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.
[Isaiah 9:6-7 NKJV] 6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of [His] government and peace [There will be] no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
[Jeremiah 23:5-6 NKJV] 5 “Behold, [the] days are coming,” says the LORD, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. 6 In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely; Now this [is] His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
[Genesis 3:15 NKJV] 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”
[Matthew 1:23 NKJV] 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”
[Jeremiah 31:31 NKJV] 31 “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—
[Matthew 26:28 NKJV] 28 “For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
[1 Corinthians 11:25 NKJV] 25 In the same manner [He] also [took] the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink [it], in remembrance of Me.”
[Hosea 11:1 NKJV] 1 “When Israel [was] a child, I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son.
[Matthew 2:15 NKJV] 15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”
[Psalm 2:7 NKJV] 7 “I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, ‘You [are] My Son, Today I have begotten You.
[Matthew 3:17 NKJV] 17 And suddenly a voice [came] from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
[Matthew 17:5 NKJV] 5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”
[Zechariah 11:12 NKJV] 12 Then I said to them, “If it is agreeable to you, give [me] my wages; and if not, refrain.” So they weighed out for my wages thirty [pieces] of silver.
[Matthew 26:15 NKJV] 15 and said, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver.
[Zechariah 11:13 NKJV] 13 And the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”–that princely price they set on me. So I took the thirty [pieces] of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD for the potter.
[Matthew 27:3-8 NKJV] 3 Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” And they said, “What [is that] to us? You see [to it]!” 5 Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. 6 But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood.” 7 And they consulted together and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in. 8 Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
[Numbers 21:7-9 NKJV] 7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you; pray to the LORD that He take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. 8 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery [serpent], and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.
[John 3:14 NKJV] 14 “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
[Exodus 12:46 NKJV] 46 “In one house it shall be eaten; you shall not carry any of the flesh outside the house, nor shall you break one of its bones.
[Psalm 34:20 NKJV] 20 He guards all his bones; Not one of them is broken.
[John 19:36 NKJV] 36 For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, “Not [one] of His bones shall be broken.”
