The Lampstand and the Olive Trees

Zechariah Sermon Series: Sermon 10

10-6-2024 – Jerry Mongello

ZECHARIAH 4

[Zechariah 4:1 NKJV] 1 Now the angel who talked with me came back and wakened me, as a man who is wakened out of his sleep.

Zechariah is awakened not from sleep, but a spiritual stupor, coma slumber or trance. Remember this the fifth vision of eight that he receives in one night. Zechariah is being bombarded with eight visions in one night.

A picture of this we see in Daniel.

[Daniel 8:15-19 NKJV] 15 Then it happened, when I, Daniel, had seen the vision and was seeking the meaning, that suddenly there stood before me one having the appearance of a man. 16 And I heard a man’s voice between [the banks of] the Ulai [U-Lie], who called, and said, “Gabriel, make this [man] understand the vision.” 17 So he came near where I stood, and when he came I was afraid and fell on my face; but he said to me, “Understand, son of man, that the vision [refers] to the time of the end.” 18 Now, as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep with my face to the ground; but he touched me, and stood me upright. 19 And he said, “Look, I am making known to you what shall happen in the latter time of the indignation; for at the appointed time the end [shall be].

[Zechariah 4:2 NKJV] 2 And he said to me, “What do you see?” So I said, “I am looking, and there [is] a lampstand of solid gold with a bowl on top of it, and on the [stand] seven lamps with seven pipes to the seven lamps.

As I mentioned two Sundays ago, the Lampstand being made out of solid gold represents deity/God.

On the [stand] seven lamps with seven pipes to the seven lamps. Seven is the number of spiritual perfection. Seven lamps, each lamp having seven pipes – it is seven times seven spiritual perfection times spiritual perfection equals 49. The number seven also represents the seven Spirits of God – the Holy Spirit.

[Isaiah 11:2 NKJV] 2 The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.

  1. The Spirit of the LORD
    2) The Spirit of wisdom
    3) The Spirit of understanding
    4) The Spirit of counsel
    5) The Spirit of power
    6) The Spirit of knowledge
    7) The Spirit of the fear of the Lord

[Revelation 5:6 NKJV] 6 And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

[Zechariah 3:9 NKJV] 9 For behold, the stone That I have laid before Joshua: Upon the stone [are] seven eyes. Behold, I will engrave its inscription,’ Says the LORD of hosts, ‘And I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.

[Zechariah 4:10 NKJV] 10 For who has despised the day of small things? For these seven rejoice to see The plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. They are the eyes of the LORD, Which scan to and fro throughout the whole earth.”

The Lampstand represents the lighting of the temple, the Lamb being the light of the world.

[John 8:12 NKJV] 12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

[Rev 21:22-25 NKJV] 22 But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb [is] its light. 24 And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. 25 Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (there shall be no night there).

It represents the fact that God gives Jesus to be a light to the Gentiles.

[Isaiah 42:5-6 NKJV] 5 Thus says God the LORD, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it, Who gives breath to the people on it, And spirit to those who walk on it: 6 “I, the LORD, have called You in righteousness, And will hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the Gentiles,

[Isaiah 49:1-6 NKJV] 1 “Listen, O coastlands, to Me, And take heed, you peoples from afar! The LORD has called Me from the womb; From the matrix of My mother He has made mention of My name. 2 And He has made My mouth like a sharp sword; In the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me, And made Me a polished shaft; In His quiver He has hidden Me.” 3 “And He said to me, ‘You [are] My servant, O Israel, In whom I will be glorified.’ 4 Then I said, ‘I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and in vain; Yet surely my just reward [is] with the LORD, And my work with my God.’ ” 5 “And now the LORD says, Who formed Me from the womb [to be] His Servant, To bring Jacob back to Him, So that Israel is gathered to Him (For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, And My God shall be My strength), 6 Indeed He says, ‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, And to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’ “

[Zechariah 4:3-7 NKJV] 3 “Two olive trees [are] by it, one at the right of the bowl and the other at its left.” 4 So I answered and spoke to the angel who talked with me, saying, “What [are] these, my lord?” 5 Then the angel who talked with me answered and said to me, “Do you not know what these are?” And I said, “No, my lord.” [The angel doesn’t answer him concerning the two olive trees]  6 So he answered and said to me: “This [is] the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the LORD of hosts. 7 ‘Who [are] you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel [you shall become] a plain! And he shall bring forth the capstone With shouts of “Grace, grace to it!” ‘ ”

This is a lesson for the church. We can do nothing without Jesus!!!

[John 15:1-8 NKJV] 1 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 “Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every [branch] that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 “You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 “I am the vine, you [are] the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 “If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw [them] into the fire, and they are burned. 7 “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.

[Zechariah 4:8-10 NKJV] 8 Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying: 9 “The hands of Zerubbabel Have laid the foundation of this temple; His hands shall also finish [it]. Then you will know That the LORD of hosts has sent Me to you. 10 For who has despised the day of small things? For these seven rejoice to see The plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. They are the eyes of the LORD, Which scan to and fro throughout the whole earth.”

[Zechariah 4:11-14 NKJV] 11 Then I answered and said to him, “What [are] these two olive trees–at the right of the lampstand and at its left?” 12 And I further answered and said to him, “What [are these] two olive branches that [drip] into the receptacles of the two gold pipes from which the golden [oil] drains?” 13 Then he answered me and said, “Do you not know what these [are]?” And I said, “No, my lord.” 14 So he said, “These [are] the two anointed ones, who stand beside the Lord of the whole earth.”

First question is what do the two olive trees represent?

The two olive trees represent the priestly and the royal offices, in other words the Messiah Jesus. Joshua from chapter 3 represents the priestly office and Zerubbabel is from the royal house of David representing the kingly office, together it is a picture of the Messiah.

Remembering when we studied the book of Hebrews that Jesus holds both the office of King and Priest. Jesus is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords and a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.

[Revelation 17:12-14 NKJV] 12 “The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 “These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. 14 “These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those [who are] with Him [are] called, chosen, and faithful.”

[1 Timothy 6:11-16 NKJV] 11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and [before] Christ Jesus who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14 that you keep [this] commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, 15 which He will manifest in His own time, [He who is] the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom [be] honor and everlasting power. Amen.

[Psalm 110:4 NKJV] 4 The LORD has sworn And will not relent, “You [are] a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”

[Hebrews 5:6 NKJV] 6 As [He] also says in another [place]: “You [are] a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek”;

The second question asked is in: Zechariah 4:12 NKJV] 12 And I further answered and said to him, “What [are these] two olive branches that [drip] into the receptacles of the two gold pipes from which the golden [oil] drains?”

The angel asks Zechariah again in; [Zechariah 4:13 NKJV] 13 Then he answered me and said, “Do you not know what these [are]?” And I said, “No, my lord.”

[Zechariah 4:11-14 NKJV] 14 So he said, “These [are] the two anointed ones, who stand beside the Lord of the whole earth.”

[Revelation 11:1-6 NKJV] 1 Then I was given a reed like a measuring rod. And the angel stood, saying, “Rise and measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there. 2 “But leave out the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, for it has been given to the Gentiles. And they will tread the holy city underfoot [for] forty-two months. 3 “And I will give [power] to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.” 4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the God of the earth. 5 And if anyone wants to harm them, fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. And if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this manner. 6 These have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire.

First the Lord of the world earth? Is Jesus of course.

[Psalm 47:2 NKJV] 2 For the LORD Most High [is] awesome; [He is] a great King over all the earth.

[Psalm 83:18 NKJV] 18 That they may know that You, whose name alone [is] the LORD, [Are] the Most High over all the earth.

The 52 million question is who are the two witnesses?  Some believe it was Elijah and Moses, others believe it Elijah and Enoch. I believed in the past the two witnesses are to contemporary Hebrews at the time of the tribulation. After studying Zechariah 4, I am leaning back to the opinion that it could be Elijah and Moses.   One problem I am having is the word said Elijah is a Tishbite from the area of Gilead, which belongs to the tribe of Manasseh. The Bible never clarifies what tribe Elijah is from!!!

[Mark 10:35-45 NKJV] & [Matthew 20:20 ] James and John

[Matthew 17:1-9 NKJV] 1 Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; 2 and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. 4 Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!” 6 And when the disciples heard [it], they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid. 7 But Jesus came and touched them and said, “Arise, and do not be afraid.” 8 When they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. 9 Now as they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man is risen from the dead.”

[John 17:1-26 NKJV] 1 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, 2 “as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. 3 “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. 4 “I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. 5 “And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. 6 “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. 7 “Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. 8 “For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received [them], and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me. 9 “I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. 10 “And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 “Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We [are]. 12 “While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 “But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 “I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 “They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. 18 “As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 “And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth. 20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21 “that they all may be one, as You, Father, [are] in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 “And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: 23 “I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me. 24 “Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. 25 “O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me. 26 “And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare [it], that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”
