Surrender, Forgiveness, Favor, Separation, God’s Faithfulness

Jerry Mongello shares on Genesis 33

When getting into this chapter it impressed upon me, we can glean these teachable principals that encourage our relationship with Jesus.

All the writings, all the accounts in the old and new testament give us hope unto salvation. These accounts show us how to live in a foreign land.
Belief vs Surrender
[Genesis 33:1-3 NKJV]
[Genesis 33:3 NKJV]
WHAT CHANGED!!! Jacob is becoming the man God created him to be, the Head of his household – the leader of his family -he became Israel that day!!!
To see what changed we need to go back.
First of all he Humbles himself – Heart Felt – Surrendering Prayer, acknowledging who God is and who Jacob is not.
[Genesis 32:9-12 NKJV]
We see where Jacob becomes believer in God in Genesis 28:10 when he sees heaven open with angels ascending and descending and above it all standing the pre-incarnate Jesus!!!
[Genesis 28:13-14 NKJV]
In the following verses we see Jacob the surrendering.
[Genesis 32:24-28 NKJV]
I believe Jacob did wrestle with God; I believe that wrestling match began the first time Jacob believed back in Genesis 28.
[Genesis 28:20-22 NKJV]
I BELIEVE HE WRESTLED WITH GOD IN GIVING UP CONTROL OF HIS LIFE, GIVING UP HIS OWN WILL, GIVING UP HIS POSSESSION,, GIVING UP HIS WORST FEAR, GIVING UP HOW TO SOLVE HIS TROUBLES, ETC
Like all believers there comes a day when we face God in time of another worst problem, the worst tragedy of our life and in that day we too wrestle with God, I mean hold on to Jesus for dear life. Explain
On that day Jacob reached the end of his rope, Pastor Martin explained last week that Jacob couldn’t go back due to Laban for fear of his life and couldn’t go forward for fear of Esau and his life. I believe Jacob was holding on for dear life to the pre-incarnate Jesus and feared letting go of Him. At this point in Jacob’s walk with God he totally surrendered his life, his trouble, his possession and his fears to God!!!
There is somewhat a similar event in the New Testament.
[John 20:14-18 NKJV] 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and [to] My God and your God.’ “
Mary wasn’t facing death, but she was going through a tragic, emotionally devastating time, her Messiah the God – Man who cast seven demons out of her was just crucified to death, now His tomb was empty with His body missing and she was crying unable to be comforted. Then she heard Jesus call her, by name “Mary”.
Mary turns around to see it be Jesus and clings to Him with a death grip. The Greek word cling is haptomai which fastens one’s self to, adhere to, cling to. Mary, like Jacob wasn’t holding or touching Jesus they were holding on for dear life.
Forgiveness
[Genesis 33:4-7 NKJV] 4 But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.
What changed, well we are not told, unlike Laban who spoke to him in a dream in Genesis 31. With Esau there is no dream or vision, just God changing Esau’s heart.
[Proverbs 16:7 NKJV]
God’s favor
We know that it wasn’t the scheme or the gifts from Jacob that changed Esau’s heart.
Jacob gives praise and credit to God for his children and possessions.
Called to be separated
In Genesis 28:1 Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him, and charged him, and said to him: “You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.
The hatred against Israel by the descendants of Esau existed throughout history and still exists today. Let me give you a few Biblical examples.
[Ezekiel 25:12-14 NKJV]

God’s faithfulness
More importantly we see God’s faithfulness in chapter 33 as we do throughout Genesis. To accomplish His will, to accomplish His promises to Abraham Genesis 12 and Genesis 15, and God’s faithfulness to accomplish His promise to us. God’s promise to make Abraham a great nation and that Abraham would be a blessing to all the nations of the world is demonstrated throughout the Bible, throughout the word of God. We cannot understand the word of God unless understand this foundational fact. That all God’s actions is to protect the coming Messiah. God’s promise to Abraham is to call out a people for Himself, creating and protecting the lineage of the Messiah.
[Genesis 3:15 NKJV]

God protecting Messianic lineage started in Adam & Eve continued in Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob/Israel, Judah, David and ,continued with the little baby was born in Bethlehem- the house of bread, that Lamb of God who took away the sins of the world.
Now after the finish work of the Cross God is still protecting His called out people ISRAEL.
To accomplish His will of redeeming Israel and humanity to Himself. The second coming of Jesus depends on the existence of Israel. On the remnant of Israel calling out to their Messiah Jesus!!!
