God Uses Joseph to Save the Messianic Line
Jerry Mongello teaches on Genesis 37.
“I find it interesting, in chapter 37 it is the beginning of one of the most famous accounts of the Bible. I believe God uses the account of Joseph as a picture of Christ. Of course Joseph was not without sin, but God used and made Joseph into a savior to his brethren, like Jesus he sold for a slave’s price. All that to say, after beginning to tell the account of Joseph and his brothers. God hits the pause button, to give a carnal account of Judah and his sons.”
[Genesis 38:1 NKJV] 1 It came to pass at that time that Judah departed from his brothers, and visited a certain Adullamite whose name [was] Hirah.
I believe God wants us to look at who Judah is, what God has planned Judah’s lineage/his offspring and after we look at Judah we can make sense of the suffering which Joseph goes through. Why God allowed it to happen to Joseph, remember at this point in history Satan doesn’t know who brought forth the Messiah. We have the Book so we can look ahead and know who brought forth the Messiah!!!
It’s my opinion that Satan assumed that the Messiah was coming from Joseph the favorite son and Joseph with the coat of many colors, the son taking the first born place [Ruben].
Satan uses Jacob’s love for Joseph, Joseph’s dreams and the pride of a seventeen year old boy to cause his brothers to hate him. Pride is dangerous, even when you are doing God’s will. When God shows you something in word, in a dream or in a vision!!!
Why is Judah important to the account of Joseph, God’s purpose for Joseph is not just saving Jacob, he is not just saving his eleven brothers and their family, he is not just saving the nation of Israel, God is using Joseph to save the Messianic line!!!
Judah means praise.
[Genesis 29:35 NKJV] 35 And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Now I will praise the LORD.” Therefore she called his name Judah. Then she stopped bearing.
Judah was Leah’s fourth and last son, Leah has daughters after Judah.
Like I said before we can look ahead, we know by whose lineage the Messiah is coming from.
[Genesis 49:8-12 NKJV] 8 “Judah, you [are he] whom your brothers shall praise; Your hand [shall be] on the neck of your enemies; Your father’s children shall bow down before you. 9 Judah [is] a lion’s whelp; From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He bows down, he lies down as a lion; And as a lion, who shall rouse him? 10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him [shall be] the obedience of the people. 11 Binding his donkey to the vine, And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine, He washed his garments in wine, And his clothes in the blood of grapes. 12 His eyes [are] darker than wine, And his teeth whiter than milk.
This is the first mention of which one of the sons of Jacob is the seed that brings forth the Messiah.
Up until this point Satan believes that Joseph is the heir apparent. He is his father’s favorite, he is given authority over his brothers
