Pastor Martin begins taking us through Genesis 22

Gen 22:1 Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
Gen 22:2 Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, (Law of First Mention) and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”

Gen 22:3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, (compare to Balaam in Numbers 22…) and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
Gen 22:4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off.
Gen 22:5 And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.”

Gen 22:6 So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together.
Gen 22:7 But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” Then he said, “Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”
Gen 22:8 And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together.
Gen 22:9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood.

Gen 22:10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
Gen 22:11 But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” So he said, “Here I am.”
Gen 22:12 And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

Gen 22:13 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.
Gen 22:14 And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the LORD it shall be provided.”

Gen 22:15 Then the Angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time out of heaven,
Gen 22:16 and said: “By Myself I have sworn, says the LORD, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son—
Gen 22:17 blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies.
Gen 22:18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
Gen 22:19 So Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.

Deeper Look:
Hos 12:10 I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.
damah- to compare, by implication to resemble, liken, consider, use similitudes

Gen 22:1 Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
Gen 22:2 Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, (Law of First Mention) and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”

It’s critical to know that Abraham planned ZERO details of this operation!
GOD chose the subject: “your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love”
John 3:16…

GOD chose the action: “offer him there as a burnt offering”

God chose the location: “go to the land of Moriah… one ONE of the mountains of which I will tell you” , even the exact place was planned by God.

Law of First Mention. Second mention is 2 Chronicles 3:1
Now Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the LORD had appeared to his father David, at the place that David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

This place would later be known by a more familiar name: Golgotha!
Sin offering was to be made outside the city
.

Gen 22:3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
Gen 22:4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off.

God chose the time:
Abraham was strategically located so that the journey would place him in the exact right place, at the exact right time!

So let’s talk about this timing.
When did Isaac die in Abraham’s mind? (When did he recon Isaac dead)
When the command came!
When did Abraham receive his son back from the dead? On the third day.
How long was Isaac dead to Abraham? Three days and three nights!

Abraham’s faith:
By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, of whom it was said, “IN ISAAC YOUR SEED SHALL BE CALLED,” concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.

And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.”

Genesis 22:5

Abraham KNEW by FAITH Isaac was returning with him!
How did he know? What faith was he exercising?

By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, of whom it was said, “IN ISAAC YOUR SEED SHALL BE CALLED,” concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.

Hebrews 11:17-19

God had promised Abraham that Isaac would be his heir, and the one from which his offspring would come. Abraham knew God didn’t lie and would fulfill His promise so he reasoned that if God asked him to sacrifice Isaac, God would have to raise Isaac from the dead to fulfill His Word.

How about the faith of Isaac, his only son, whom he loved?

So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son (who carried the wood for the sacrifice? Who carried the One and only Begotten Son’s Cross?); and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together.
But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” Then he said, “Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”
And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together.

Genesis 22:6-8

“of them together is”
yachad [yakh’-adFrom H3161; properly a unit, that is, (adverbially) unitedly: – alike, at all (once), both, likewise, only, (al-) together, withal.

Isaac ALSO knew that he was the heir, the one through whom Abraham would have countless descendants, and he was obedient to his father, even unto death!

Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood.

And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
Make no mistake, Abraham was going to use the knife!!!

But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” So he said, “Here I am.”
And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.

And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide; the Lord will see (to it) as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the LORD it shall be provided.” seen

Genesis 22:9-14

It could be implied that Abraham knew he was acting out a future prophetic event.
He told Isaac that the Lord would provide Himself a lamb.
Here it names the mountain Jehovah Jireh, for in the mount of the Lord it SHALL be seen, future tense!-

Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” John 8:56

Gen 22:15 Then the Angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, and said: “By Myself I have sworn, says the LORD, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son— blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies.
In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
So Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.

Now it came to pass after these things that it was told Abraham, saying, “Indeed Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor: Huz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram, Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.” And Bethuel begot Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Thahash, and Maachah.
