Sermon 8
Jesus Christ: Apostle and High Priest of our Faith
Pastor Martin
“Therefore”…
Heb 2:1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed (prosecho- to hold in mind, pay attention to, be cautious about, apply oneself to, adhere to; etc. + perissoteros- more superabundantly) Nautical term used when a ship is safely moored to the dock or anchored firmly in the harbor. to the things we have heard
Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.
, lest we drift away. (pararhueo- to flow by, carelessly pass) another nautical reference, this time of a ship that is NOT moored or anchored properly that just drifts away…
Heb 2:2 For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward,
Heb 2:3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,
Heb 2:4 God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?
AND
Heb 2:11 For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren,
SEE John 17…
Heb 3:1 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus,
“Apostle” = delegate, ambassador, messenger, sent one
John 17:18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
“High Priest”…
Heb 3:2 who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house.
Who appointed Him (Jesus)
Who appointed Moses? Whose voice did he hear from the burning bush?
Heb 3:3 For this One (Jesus) has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honor than the house.
Heb 3:4 For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God.

Firstborn (Son)
High Priest
?????
Heb 3:5 And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward,
Heb 3:6 but Christ (was faithful) as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.
“As a Son”
Mat 3:16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.
Mat 3:17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
“over His own House”
Mat 11:27 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.
Mat 10:25 It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household!
“whose house we are”
1Pe 2:1 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking,
1Pe 2:2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,
1Pe 2:3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
1Pe 2:4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious,
1Pe 2:5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
1Pe 2:6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, “BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A CHIEF CORNERSTONE, ELECT, PRECIOUS, AND HE WHO BELIEVES ON HIM WILL BY NO MEANS BE PUT TO SHAME.”
Heb 3:6 but Christ (was faithful) as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.
“the confidence”
parrhēsia
par-rhay-see’-ah
From G3956 and a derivative of G4483; all out spokenness, that is, frankness, bluntness, publicity; by implication assurance: – bold (X -ly, -ness, -ness of speech), confidence, X freely, X openly, X plainly (-ness).
1Jn 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
“the rejoicing”
kauchēma
kow’-khay-mah
From G2744; a boast (properly the objective; by implication the act) in a good or bad sense: – boasting, (whereof) to glory (of), glorying, rejoice (-ing).
Eph 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
Eph 2:5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
Eph 2:6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
Eph 2:7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
Eph 2:9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Eph 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
Heb 3:6 but Christ (was faithful) as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.
“if”- it’s conditional.
But what is the evidence that one holds fast the “plainly spoken word”, and the boasting in Christ to the end?
They do not depart!
1Jn 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.
1Jn 1:7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 1Jn 2:18 Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour.
John 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
