[Gen 27:1-4 NKJV] 1 Now it came to pass, when Isaac was old and his eyes were so dim that he could not see, that he called Esau his older son and said to him, “My son.” And he answered him, “Here I am.” 2 Then he said, “Behold now, I am old. I do not know the day of my death. 3 “Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me. 4 “And make me savory food, such as I love, and bring [it] to me that I may eat, that my soul may bless you before I die.” 

  • Isaac is about 115 years old when he blessed Jacob, using the age of Abraham at his death. Isaac lives to be 180 years old.
  • Esau wanted the birthright and the blessing because it was a symbol of power to the Canaanites, because they knew Isaac was blessed by God. Esau represents the world and false religions. The historian Josephus writes that Esau never consulted his father Isaac before marrying the two Hittite women. He insinuates that Esau marries into the family of Elon who was a great prince among the Canaanites, a marriage of convenience. Perhaps preparing for the time when God gives his father the land of Canaan.
  • Esau never gives any concern for the Messianic birth line.   
  • He wanted the monetary value that the first born received. Even though Esau despised his birthright and the blessing. In Genesis 25:29 Esau sells his birthright for a bow of red stew. 
  • Esau never repents for despising the birthright of the Messiah.

[Hebrew 12:15-17 NKJV] 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; 16 lest there [be] any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.

Like the denial and betrayal of Jesus by Peter and Judas. Both were remorseful, but only Peter repented.

  • Was Isaac was sinning when he tried to bless Esau instead of Jacob? Isaac knew that Esau despised his birthright and blessing. I believe that Isaac knew that Esau sold his birthright to Jacob [Genesis 25:29]. He knew that God was going to bless Jacob and not Esau. He was promoting his will, not God’s!!!

[Genesis 25:22-23 NKJV] 22 But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If [all is] well, why [am I like] this?” So she went to inquire of the LORD. 23 And the LORD said to her: “Two nations [are] in your womb, Two peoples shall be separated from your body; [One] people shall be stronger than the other, And the older shall serve the younger.”

  • It is noteworthy and I believe that Isaac realizes that when he gave the blessing of Jacob it was the will of God, even though he was deceived by Rebekah and Jacob. Isaac doesn’t rescind the blessing or curse Jacob. 

[Genesis 28:1 NKJV] 1 Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him, and charged him, and said to him: “You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.

[Hebrews 11:20 NKJV] 20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.

[Genesis 27:5-25 NKJV] 5 Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt game and to bring [it]. 6 So Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying, “Indeed I heard your father speak to Esau your brother, saying, 7 ‘Bring me game and make savory food for me, that I may eat it and bless you in the presence of the LORD before my death.’ 8 “Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to what I command you. 9 “Go now to the flock and bring me from there two choice kids of the goats, and I will make savory food from them for your father, such as he loves. 10 “Then you shall take [it] to your father, that he may eat [it], and that he may bless you before his death.” 11 And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “Look, Esau my brother [is] a hairy man, and I [am] a smooth-[skinned] man. 12 “Perhaps my father will feel me, and I shall seem to be a deceiver to him; and I shall bring a curse on myself and not a blessing.” 13 But his mother said to him, “[Let] your curse [be] on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, get [them] for me.” 14 And he went and got [them] and brought [them] to his mother, and his mother made savory food, such as his father loved. 15 Then Rebekah took the choice clothes of her elder son Esau, which [were] with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son. 16 And she put the skins of the kids of the goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. 17 Then she gave the savory food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob. 18 So he went to his father and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am. Who [are] you, my son?” … 20 But Isaac said to his son, “How [is it] that you have found [it] so quickly, my son?” And he said, “Because the LORD your God brought [it] to me.” 21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that I may feel you, my son, whether you [are] really my son Esau or not.” 22 So Jacob went near to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, “The voice [is] Jacob’s voice, but the hands [are] the hands of Esau.” 23 And he did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him. 24 Then he said, “[Are] you really my son Esau?” He said, “I [am].” 25 He said, “Bring [it] near to me, and I will eat of my son’s game, so that my soul may bless you.” So he brought [it] near to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank. 

  • First of all, God did not need Rebekah and Jacob’s help. 
  • God made it clear that the older would serve the younger. God would have made it happen!!! 
  • Funny that Jacob was worried about appearing to be a deceiver [“I shall seem to be a deceiver to him”]. Well that is exactly what I was doing. Jacob was deceiving his father, likewise Rebekah was deceiving her husband. In the text Jacob had plenty of time back out of the deception and lies.
  • Does God use deception by others to accomplish His will? I believe scripture would say yes.

[Joshua 2:1-11 NKJV] 1 Now Joshua the son of Nun sent out two men from Acacia Grove to spy secretly, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” So they went, and came to the house of a harlot named Rahab, and lodged there. 2 And it was told to the king of Jericho, saying, “Behold, men have come here tonight from the children of Israel to search out the country.” 3 So the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered your house, for they have come to search out all the country.” 4 Then the woman took the two men and hid them. So she said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they [were] from. 5 “And it happened as the gate was being shut, when it was dark, that the men went out. Where the men went I do not know; pursue them quickly, for you may overtake them.” 6 (But she had brought them up to the roof and hidden them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order on the roof.) 7 Then the men pursued them by the road to the Jordan, to the fords. And as soon as those who pursued them had gone out, they shut the gate. 8 Now before they lay down, she came up to them on the roof, 9 and said to the men: “I know that the LORD has given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you. 10 “For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who [were] on the other side of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. 11 “And as soon as we heard [these things], our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the LORD your God, He [is] God in heaven above and on earth beneath. Did God cause Rahab to lie? No 

[2Thessalonians 2:9-12 NKJV] 9 The coming of the [lawless one] is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 

  • God’s perfect will vs the permissive will of God

[Romans 12:1-2 NKJV] 1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, [which is] your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what [is] that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

The word ‘good’ suggests the existence of another word ‘bad’. The word ‘light’ informs us of the existence of the word ‘darkness’. The perfect will of God in Romans 12:2 suggests the existence of a less than perfect will of God. In other words if there is a perfect will of God, then there is also a not so perfect will of God also known as permissive will of God. I want you to know that the Lord knew you before the foundation of the world (Jeremiah 1:5). Before you were in your mother’s womb, He had decided His will for your life. So you are not on earth by accident, you are here on earth for a particular purpose (God’s ordained purpose).

It is offensive to our Creator to label ourselves as Christians, declaring we are living in God’s perfect will when our lives are exhibiting the very opposite. Jehoshaphat and Balaam entered a dangerous zone when they chose God’s permissive will, even after being warned. God cautioned them, but He did not stop them from proceeding. Although they operated outside of God’s perfect will, He was merciful unto them, allowing them space for repentance. Just because God does not intervene in a situation and prevent it from happening, it does not mean that He sanctions it. In our own lives, we are often warned against conforming to the things of this world, and against making harmful choices. We must strive to keep our minds and spirits focused on living within God’s perfect will. Explain the issue of Balaam

  • Some say they don’t know what the will of God is or what God wills for their life is. Here is a simple answer.

[Micah 6:8 NKJV] 8 He has shown you, O man, what [is] good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?

  • Many times we get in the way of God’s will, remember we can stop the will of God from being done and neither can any other being!!!

[Genesis 50:19-20 NKJV] 19 Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for [am] I in the place of God? 20 “But as for you, you meant evil against me; [but] God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as [it is] this day, to save many people alive.

  • We do see that Jacob and Rebekah suffered consequences for not being in the perfect will of God. Explain, Jacob gets deceived by Laban and Rebekah never sees her beloved son for the rest of her life.
  • A perfect explanation of staying in the perfect will of God is Jesus. 

[Matthew 26:39 (NKJV] He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You [will.]”

[Hebrews 5:6-9 NKJV] 6 As [He] also says in another [place]: “You [are] a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek”; 7 who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear, 8 though He was a Son, [yet] He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. 9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,

[Philippians 2:5-8 NKJV] 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, [and] coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to [the point of] death, even the death of the cross.

[Genesis 27:26–29 NKJV] 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come near now and kiss me, my son.” 27 And he came near and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him and said: “Surely, the smell of my son [Is] like the smell of a field Which the LORD has blessed. 28 Therefore may God give you Of the dew of heaven, Of the fatness of the earth, And plenty of grain and wine. 29 Let peoples serve you, And nations bow down to you. Be master over your brethren, And let your mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed [be] everyone who curses you, And blessed [be] those who bless you!”

  • Verse 28 begins the blessings, the first part of the blessing deals with prospering Jacob with the dew of Heaven, fatness of the earth and plenty of grain and vine. Please do not confuse this blessing with the false prosperity gospel or false kingdom now gospel. Remember that God was creating the nation of Israel. Remember there is a difference between the bride of Yahweh God the Father and the bride of Jesus God the Son. God was building a nation that would bring forth the Messiah. God blessed Abraham made him wealthy and strong, likewise God prospered Isaac and He is going to prosper Jacob and prosper Israel then and now. Explain
  • The second blessing is concerning the Seed. The Messiah, Māšîaḥ in Hebrew and Messias in Greek which means the “Anointed”, the Christ. This blessing started with the BIRTH OF THE SEED [JESUS], THE VICTORY AT THE CROSS AND JESUS IS SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD NOW!!! The rest of the second blessing is the future, it hasn’t come to pass on earth yet. Which is, “Let people serve you, And nations bow down to you. Be master over your brethren, And let your mother’s sons bow down to you”

I am going to read these verses again, this time completing it.

[Philippians 2:5-11 NKJV] 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, [and] coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to [the point of] death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and [that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is] Lord, to the glory of God the Father.   

[Revelation 12:1-12 NKJV] 1 Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars. 2 Then being with child, she cried out in labor and in pain to give birth. 3 And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. 4 His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to give birth, to devour her Child as soon as it was born. 5 She bore a male Child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her Child was caught up to God and His throne. 6 Then the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there one thousand two hundred and sixty days. 7 And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, 8 but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. 9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. 10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. 11 “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. 12 “Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time.”

  • The third blessing is right out Genesis 12:1-3

[Revelation 19:11-16 NKJV] 11 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him [was] called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 His eyes [were] like a flame of fire, and on His head [were] many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He [was] clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. 15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And He has on [His] robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
