Final Conversations With Jesus

Pastor Martin Saine brings us the Resurrection Series Part V

Jesus was “sanctified”- set apart, made holy, purified and consecrated, BECAUSE HE COMPLETED THE WORK THE FATHER SENT HIM TO DO! We are sanctified- set apart, made holy, purified and consecrated, BY BELIEVING IN HIS COMPLETED WORK!

Pastor Martin Saine

Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.  As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

John 17:17-19

Jesus devoted Himself to the Disciples, and to all who would believe through their testimony, with clear teaching and encouragement, so that they “WE”, should not be skandalized; tripped up, enticed to sin, stumble, or cause others to stumble, when things don’t work out the way we think they should.

The disciples weren’t prepared for what was to come, but praise God, Jesus was!

RESURRECTION  Sermon Series 2022 – Part V

John 16 & 17

Joh 16:1  “These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble.

What “things”?

Chapters 13 thru 15.

Last Supper

Washing Disciples feet (lessons on servanthood)

Declaration that the betrayer was one of them

Declaration that Jesus was going to the Father shortly

Clear declaration that Jesus IS God!

Promise of the coming of the Holy Spirit to indwell the believer

Joh 14:16  And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—

Joh 14:17  the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

Promise of His return

Joh 14:1  “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.

Joh 14:2  In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

Joh 14:3  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

Joh 14:4  And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

The gift of peace in a troubled world

Joh 14:26  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

Joh 14:27  Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Joh 14:28  You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I.

Joh 14:29  “And now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe.

Abiding in Christ-without Him we can do nothing but with Him we will bear much fruit,  Commandment to love one another as He loved us,   Being called friends instead of servants,   Being chosen by Him!!!!!,

Chapter 15 ends with Jesus telling us plainly that the world will hate us, just as it hated Him.  The simple fact that Jesus chooses us out of the world, and we accept His call, is enough for the world to hate us.

Since they persecuted Jesus, they will also persecute us BECAUSE JESUS DWELLS WITHIN US!!!!

The worst and deepest kind of hatred is that of something that pains us that just won’t go away; And folks, Jesus is never going to just go away!

And in spite of this, we will be witnesses!

Joh 16:1  “These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. (skandalizo- to entrap, trip up, entice to sin, figuratively stumble, make to offend)

What makes chapters 13-17 unique is that Jesus’s public ministry was complete in Chapter 12.  He was no longer ministering to the general public because everything He could say to them had been said.  He had been examined and found without sin, had kept the Father’s will, spoken every word He was to speak in public, and now the time for public ministry was over.

Beginning in Chapter 13 of John, everything said between chapters 13-17 are SPECIFICALLY ADDRESSED TO THOSE THAT BELIEVE(D) IN HIM!!!

THESE ARE OUR CHAPTERS!!!!!

Joh 16:2  They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service.

Joh 16:3  And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me.

Joh 16:4  But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them. “And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.

Joh 16:5  “But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’

Hos 5:15  I will return again to My place Till they acknowledge their offense. Then they will seek My face; In their affliction they will earnestly seek Me.”

Jesus was prepared because this was part of the plan all along.

Joh 16:6  But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

(In John 13:36 Peter asked; “Lord, where are you going?” and in 14:5 Thomas said “Lord, we do not know where you are going, and how can we know the way?”.  Yet now they are consumed about what is going to happen to them and not where Jesus is going…)

Joh 16:7  Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

It wasn’t that Jesus had to leave so that the Holy Spirit could come, like only one of them could be here at the same time, it was that Jesus had to complete the work of redemption and justification before the Holy Spirit could come!

As long as Jesus was in the world, He was the light of the world.  The Holy Spirit was already here, working in and through Jesus, working with the disciples, and convincing the world to believe in Jesus.

The sacrifice had to be paid, once and for all, and the sin of the world paid for in full, before the Holy Spirit would come and indwell those that believe.

Joh 16:8  And when He has come, He will convict (elenkho- to confute, admonish: convict, convince, tell a fault, rebuke, reprove) the world of sin,  and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Joh 16:9  of sin, because they do not believe in Me; (sin- singular: the sin of not believing in Jesus.)

Joh 16:10  of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; Just as Jesus refuted self-righteousness of the religious establishment, the Holy Spirit will tell what true righteousness is- Jesus!)

Joh 16:11  of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

The god of this age, the ruler of the world (temporarily) HAS BEEN JUDGED!  His sentence has not been carried out yet, but the judgment is sure!

The Cross and Resurrection were God’s greatest victory, yet the devil (and the world’s judgment system) viewed it as the devil’s victory.  WRONG!

The Holy Spirit gave inspiration for NT Scriptures.  …….

Joh 16:12  “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

Joh 16:13  However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

How much truth?  ALL truth!

2Pe 1:2  Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,

2Pe 1:3  as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,

2Pe 1:4  by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Joh 16:14  He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.

Joh 16:15  All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

Joh 16:16  “A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, because I go to the Father.”

Joh 16:17  Then some of His disciples said among themselves, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?”

Joh 16:18  They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not know what He is saying.”

Joh 16:19  Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’?

Joh 16:20  Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.

Joh 16:21  A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.

Joh 16:22  Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.

Joh 16:23  “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you.

Joh 16:24  Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

Joh 16:25  “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father.

Joh 16:26  In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you;

Joh 16:27  for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God.

Joh 16:28  I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”

Joh 16:29  His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech!

Joh 16:30  Now we are sure that You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God.”

Joh 16:31  Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?

Joh 16:32  Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.

Joh 16:33  These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

THE LORD’S PRAYER!

Joh 17:1  Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You,

Joh 17:2  as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him.

Joh 17:3  And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

Joh 17:4  I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.

Joh 17:5  And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.

Joh 17:6  “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.

Joh 17:7  Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You.

Joh 17:8  For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me.

Joh 17:9  “I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours.

Joh 17:10  And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them.

Joh 17:11  Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep (tereo- to set a watch, to guard -to prevent injury or loss, to keep an eye on)  through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are.

Joh 17:12  While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

Joh 17:13  But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. Christ’s joy, fulfilled in us!  What could be better!

Joh 17:14  I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

Joh 17:15  I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.

Joh 17:16  They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

Joh 17:17  Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

Joh 17:18  As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.

Joh 17:19  And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

Joh 17:20  “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word;

Joh 17:21  that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.

The unity of the church in Christ and with each other (as in Christ), testifies to the world that the Father sent Jesus.

How are we doing?

Joh 17:22  And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one:

Joh 17:23  I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.

Joh 17:24  “Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

Joh 17:25  O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me.

Joh 17:26  And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

1Co 12:18  But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased.

1Co 12:19  And if they were all one member, where would the body be?

1Co 12:20  But now indeed there are many members, yet one body.

1Co 12:21  And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.”

1Co 12:22  No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary.

1Co 12:23  And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty,

1Co 12:24  but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it,

1Co 12:25  that there should be no schism (schisma- split or gap, division, rent, tear) in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.

1Co 12:26  And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

1Co 12:27  Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.

1Co 11:18  For first of all, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it.

1Co 11:19  For there must also be factions among you, that those who are approved may be recognized among you.

While the context of this passage refers to the observance of Communion, it illustrates that there ARE areas where the church needs to schism.

The Bible says “how can two walk together unless they be agreed?”.  This doesn’t mean we agree on everything, but we do agree on the clear Biblical teaching concerning issues the Bible has laid out for us.

Example:

Joh 10:7  Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

Joh 10:8  All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.

Joh 10:9  I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.

Joh 10:10  The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Joh 10:11  “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.

Joh 10:12  But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them.

Joh 10:13  The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep.

Joh 10:14  I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own.

Joh 10:15  As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.

Joh 10:16  And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.

Joh 10:17  “Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again.

Joh 10:18  No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”

Joh 10:19  Therefore there was a division (schisma) again among the Jews because of these sayings.

Joh 10:20  And many of them said, “He has a demon and is mad. Why do you listen to Him?”

Joh 10:21  Others said, “These are not the words of one who has a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

The schism in John 10 was over whether Jesus was from God or from the devil. Was Jesus righteous or was he evil?  Were his words and deeds true, or were they deceptive?

Ultimately, the proof was the Resurrection!  It was this event that set Jesus apart from all others in history.  He, and He alone, had the power to lay down His life, and the power to take it up again.

And this He did so that we may have eternal life!

Because He lives, we can live also!
