Resurrection Sermon Series

The Resurrection is the most significant event in all of human history.

Nothing else even compares! Even the Creation of the heavens and earth, and everything in them, pales in comparison to The Resurrection.

Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels ‘around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain To receive power and riches and wisdom, And strength and honor and glory and blessing!”

And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sits on the throne, And to the Lamb, forever and ever!”

Revelation 5:11-13

The Resurrection is qualifier! It testified that Jesus is God, that He is our Kinsman Redeemer, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, the Suffering Servant who died on the Cross, and The Resurrection and The Life!

Without the Resurrection, it would all be meaningless. God proved He had the power to step into His own creation, He proved He could live as a human and resist sin through the power of the Holy Spirit, He testified that He, and He alone, has the power to create life, sustain life, and restore life!

RESURRECTION 2022

Notes from Pastor Martin Saine March 6, 2022

Today we begin our series on The Resurrection.  Every year we struggle to get so much information in a couple Sundays, so we are going to take time this year to get a more in depth look at the critical topics surrounding The Resurrection in general, and Jesus Christ in particular.

The Resurrection is the most significant event in all of human history.  Nothing else even compares!

Even the Creation of the heavens and earth, and everything in them, pales in comparison to The Resurrection.

Throughout history there have been numerous accounts of other people besides Jesus who died and were raised from the dead.  This in itself is a tremendous miracle!  Each case is a demonstration that God has the power to give life, even after a person has died.

Here are some examples from the Bible:

The widow of Zarethath’s son (Elijah) in 1IKings 17:17-24

The Shunammite woman’s son (Elisha) in 2 Kings 4:18-27

An unknown dead man being hidden in Elisha’s tomb…

2Ki 13:20  Then Elisha died, and they buried him. And the raiding bands from Moab invaded the land in the spring of the year.

2Ki 13:21  So it was, as they were burying a man, that suddenly they spied a band of raiders; and they put the man in the tomb of Elisha; and when the man was let down and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet.

Hint!

2Ki 2:6  Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here, please, for the LORD has sent me on to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!” So the two of them went on.

2Ki 2:7  And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood facing them at a distance, while the two of them stood by the Jordan.

2Ki 2:8  Now Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up, and struck the water; and it was divided this way and that, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground.

2Ki 2:9  And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?” Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.”

2Ki 2:10  So he said, “You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.”

The Widow of Nain’s son (first by Jesus) in Luke 7:11-17       “Young man, I say unto you, get up!”

Jairus’s daughter (Jesus) in Luke 8:40-56

Lazarus of Bethany (Jesus) John 11

Jerusalem Saints at the Resurrection- Matthew 27:50-53.

Mat 27:50  And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.

Mat 27:51  Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split,

Mat 27:52  and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;

Mat 27:53  and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

Tabitha, also called Dorcas (Peter) Acts 9:36-43

Eutychus (Paul) in Acts 20:7-12

What differentiates these resurrections from that of Jesus is the source.

None of these examples show the deceased being the source of power for their resurrection.   The restoration of their lives was 100% dependant on an OUTSIDE SOURCE!

What sets Jesus apart?

Joh 11:21  Now Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

Joh 11:22  But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”

Joh 11:23  Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

Joh 11:24  Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

Joh 11:25  Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.

Joh 11:26  And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

Joh 11:27  She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

Jesus IS the source!

Joh 10:17  “Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again.

Joh 10:18  No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”

There are four key aspects of Christ (which also happen to be titles for Jesus Christ) that we need to be well versed in to really get the impact of the Resurrection:

1) Son of God- John

2) Son of Man- Luke

3) Suffering Servant- Mark

4) Son of David (Conquoring King)- Matthew

We’ll look at the first three today.

SON OF GOD

Used 81 times in NT.

Joh 1:32  And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.

Joh 1:33  I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

Joh 1:34  And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”

Luk_22:70  Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?” So He said to them, “You rightly say that I am.”

Joh 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Joh 1:2  He was in the beginning with God.

Joh 1:3  All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

Joh 1:4  In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Joh 1:5  And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

Joh 1:6  There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

Joh 1:7  This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.

Joh 1:8  He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

Joh 1:9  That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.

Joh 1:10  He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.

Joh 1:11  He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.

Joh 1:12  But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

Joh 1:13  who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Gen 1:26  Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Gen 1:27  So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Gen 1:28  Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Gen 1:29  And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.

Gen 1:30  Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so.

Gen 1:31  Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Psa 2:1  Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing?

Psa 2:2  The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying,

Psa 2:3  “Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.”

Psa 2:4  He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The LORD shall hold them in derision.

Psa 2:5  Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure:

Psa 2:6  “Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion.”

Psa 2:7  “I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.

Psa 2:8  Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession.

Psa 2:9  You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ “

Psa 2:10  Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of the earth.

Psa 2:11  Serve the LORD with fear, And rejoice with trembling.

Psa 2:12  Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way, When His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.

Mic 5:2  “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.”

Jesus Christ, God the Son, The Source, The Life, The Resurrection, God eternal, Pre-existant, who Was, who IS, and who is to come, the One who is set apart from all others, stepped down into His Creation to live, to die, and to live again!

This brings us to the second Title, or description of Jesus:

Son of Man– 90 times in NT, 85 by Jesus Himself!

Isa 9:6  For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isa 9:7  Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Son of Man– 90 times in NT, 85 by Jesus Himself!

Mat_12:8  For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Mat_12:40  For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Mat_13:41  The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness,

Mat_16:27  For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.

Mat_17:9  Now as they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man is risen from the dead.”

Mat_19:28  So Jesus said to them, “Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Stephen

Act_7:56  and said, “Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”

Rev 1:10  I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet,

Rev 1:11  saying, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,” and, “What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.”

Rev 1:12  Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands,

Rev 1:13  and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band.

Rev 1:14  His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire;

Rev 1:15  His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters;

Rev 1:16  He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength.

Rev 1:17  And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last.

Rev 1:18  I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.

Rev 1:19  Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this.

STILL the Son of Man!!!!!!

Altered for eternity!

Why was it important for God to become a “Son of Man”- i/e., human?

Heb 9:22  And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.

Heb 9:23  Therefore it was necessary that the copies of the things in the heavens should be purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

Heb 9:24  For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;

Heb 9:25  not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another—

Heb 9:26  He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

Heb 9:27  And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,

Heb 9:28  so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

The wages of sin is death – eternal separation from God- and MUST BE PAID!

But God, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance, determined to pay the ultimate price Himself!

Rom 3:21  But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,

Rom 3:22  even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;

Rom 3:23  for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Rom 3:24  being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

Rom 3:25  whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,

Rom 3:26  to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

In order for Him to do that, and still meet His requirements, He HAD to become human while maintaining His Godly nature!

Christ is our Kinsmen Redeemer; of near kin, related by blood, HUMAN!

Humanity sinned, the price of which is eternal death- separation from God – and therefore the price to be paid for that sin had to be human.

But not just any human, an ABSOLUTELY PERFECT HUMAN!

How can any human be perfect enough to pay the price for humanities sin?  The Bible says that “ALL have sinned and come short of the glory of God”.

The answer is that we can’t.  No human (apart from Jesus) could.

Because The standard is absolute perfection!

God the Son had to become human on our behalf, He had to resist the same devil we resist, face the same temptations we face, rely on the same Father God we rely on, trust the same Scriptures He asks us to trust in, and live by faith through the power of the Holy Spirit in the same manner He asks us to do,  AND do it perfectly, without sin, every second of every day, every single time!

If He had missed the mark ONE TIME the Resurrection would not have taken place.

Now to our final aspect of Christ we’ll talk about today:

Suffering Servant, Sacrifical Lamb,

Exo 12:1  Now the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,

Exo 12:2  “This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you.

Exo 12:3  Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying: ‘On the tenth of this month every man shall take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a lamb for a household.

Exo 12:4  And if the household is too small for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next to his house take it according to the number of the persons; according to each man’s need you shall make your count for the lamb.

Exo 12:5  Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats.

Exo 12:6  Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight.

Exo 12:7  And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it.

Exo 12:8  Then they shall eat the flesh on that night; roasted in fire, with unleavened bread and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.

Exo 12:9  Do not eat it raw, nor boiled at all with water, but roasted in fire—its head with its legs and its entrails.

Exo 12:10  You shall let none of it remain until morning, and what remains of it until morning you shall burn with fire.

Exo 12:11  And thus you shall eat it: with a belt on your waist, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. So you shall eat it in haste. It is the LORD’s Passover.

Exo 12:12  ‘For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.

Exo 12:13  Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

Exo 12:14  ‘So this day shall be to you a memorial; and you shall keep it as a feast to the LORD throughout your generations. You shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting ordinance.

The Sacrificial Lamb had to be without “spot or blemish”- perfect.  This was done yearly to cover sins for one year- not permanently do away with them.

Joh 1:29  The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

Joh 1:30  This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’

Joh 1:31  I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”

Rev 13:8  All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Rev 5:1  And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals.

Rev 5:2  Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?”

Rev 5:3  And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it.

Rev 5:4  So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it.

Rev 5:5  But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.”

Rev 5:6  And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

Rev 5:7  Then He came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne.

Rev 5:8  Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

Rev 5:9  And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,

Rev 5:10  And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth.”

Rev 5:11  Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands,

Rev 5:12  saying with a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain To receive power and riches and wisdom, And strength and honor and glory and blessing!”

Rev 5:13  And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sits on the throne, And to the Lamb, forever and ever!”

Rev 5:14  Then the four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped Him who lives forever and ever.

The Resurrection is qualifer!  It testified that Jesus is God, that He is our Kinsman Redeemer, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, the Suffering Servant who died on the Cross, and The Resurrection and The Life!

Without the Resurrection, it would all be meaningless.

God proved He had the power to step into His own creation,

He proved He could live as a human and resist sin through the power of the Holy Spirit,

He testified that He, and He alone, has the power to create life, sustain life, and restore life!

All through the demonstration of His power at the Resurrection.

Because HE lives, we can also live through faith in Jesus Christ!

Joh 1:12  But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

Joh 1:13  who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
