“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A cold, the foal of a donkey.
Zechariah 9:9
It’s the first Palm Sunday, and here comes Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey. The crowds begin to shout “Hosanna! Hosanna!” The old donkey pricks up his ears. Some in the crowd throw their coats in the road; others spread out palm branches.
“Well!” says the donkey, switching a fly off a mange patch. “I had no idea they really appreciated me like this! Listen to those hosannas, would you. I must really be something!”
Friends, if anybody comes around after the service saying, “Wow! That was terrific!”—they’re not actually saying hosanna to you.
All you did was bring Jesus to them. —A. W. Tozer
Be the donkey and bring Jesus to people. One of the last things Jesus said to His disciples before returning to heaven was “…go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:19). We are to carry Jesus into all the world.
You have the One, who rode into Jerusalem on this beast of burden, living in you if you have accepted Him as your King and Savior. Paul wrote in Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” This is the greatest story in history and the only hope for humanity. We have to share it, as it was shared with us. We have to own it and love it and be passionate about Jesus and His great love for the world.
Living as a donkey means carrying Jesus everywhere we go; bringing Him into the city, into the market, into our homes. We lift Jesus up, we point others to Him, we don’t seek honor, or turn the accolades of others to the the only One Who is worthy of our hosanna.
So who carry Jesus to this Easter? Alternatively, who will you offer to carry to church to meet Jesus?
